On the initiative of A.V. Melnik, a staff member at the Solovki Museum, the remains of prisoners on Solovki were reburied on 8 June 1990 in a common grave in the settlement graveyard. A wooden cross designed by M.S. Galinsky was erected over the grave.
The remains of the prisoners were discovered during the building of a cottage for museum staff on the area of the old camp cemetery, today Father Pavel Florensky Street. In 1994 members of the Solovetsky fraternity placed a marble plaque at the foot of the cross. It bears the inscription, “Prisoners who died here before 1939. Buried on 8 June 1990”.
