Background

The camp cemetery near the Solovki Kremlin was located next to the monastery graveyard. Prisoners who died or were shot were buried there. In 1940 the cemetery was destroyed when the hospital of the Northern Fleet’s training school was built: the monastery and camp grave markers were removed and the land was levelled.

At present a civil hospital and some residential buildings, built in the 1960s and in 1990-1992, occupy the area. In June 1989, thanks to the efforts of the Solovetsky Museum and the Memorial Society, the Solovki Stone was placed here. In late May 1990 when cottages were being built for museum staff remains were discovered here; they were reburied in the settlement graveyard. In summer 1998 an Avenue of Remembrance of birch trees was planted on the site. In June 1999, thanks to the efforts of the Association of Anaesthetists of Northwest Russia, a cross was erected next to the stone to mark the 60th anniversary of the camp’s closure and in memory of those shot in 1933. On 26 July that year the cross was consecrated by Archimandrite Josif, the incumbent of the Solovetsky Monastery.

In 2005, the memorial square was laid out with paving stones and fenced in. Today this is the memorial complex in memory of the Solovki Prisoners. It includes the 1989 memorial to the Solovki Prisoners, the commemorative orthodox cross (1999), the memorial to Yakuts who died in the camp (2009), the memorial to Poles imprisoned on Solovki (2011), the memorial to Ukrainians imprisoned on Solovki (2012), the memorial to the Socialists and Anarchists imprisoned on Solovki (2013) and the memorial to the Scouts imprisoned on Solovki (2014).
