In June 1948, 2,128 people, including deported Lithuanians, were transported to the Irkutsk Region’s Zima district, where they were allocated to various settlements. The number of Lithuanians in the town of Zima has not been established. Those who died there were buried in the town graveyard [No. 38-31] and in the graveyard of the nearby Ukhtui village in accordance with Catholic rites. The total number buried there is not known.
In 2005 the graveyard in Ukhtui village was studied by Lithuanian researcher Gintautas Alekna. A photo survey was carried out, eight graves with markers were uncovered, and a plan of the layout of the burials was made. The following year the “Destination, Siberia” expedition from Lithuania visited the graveyard. Its members cleared the Lithuanian graves and re-attached their crosses and name plates.
Research on the Genocide of the Lithuanian People (Lietuvos gyventoju Genocidas; 3 vols. 1999-2009) contains about 130,000 biographical entries (in Lithuanian). Volume 3 covers the period from 1948 onwards.
