In the 1930s, executions of the inhabitants of Mariinsk and of Siblag prisoners were carried out on the edge of the forest on the way to the Maly Antibes village. They were also buried there.
In the 1960s, this site was discovered when a quarry for sand was being prepared. The excavators turned up human bones and fragments of shoes as well as sand. The Mariinsk city administration learned of this and the quarry was closed.
In October 2010 a memorial stone, surmounted by an eight-sided metal cross, was erected 70 metres from the burial site, bearing the inscription, “To the innocent slain”. It was funded by N.P. Plutonov, director of the Mariinsk auto-transport enterprise, whose grandfather was shot in Mariinsk. In 2011 staff from the Mariinsk historical museum and reservation put up a pillar bearing information next to the memorial stone. Ceremonies are held at the memorial in October, before the Day in Commemoration of the Victims of Political Repression.
A Book in Remembrance of the Victims of Political Repression in the Kemerovo Region (2 vols. 1995-1996) includes 6,270 biographical entries for those shot or sent to the Gulag.
